A working farm that happens to have a great view
Deer Park Heights is a privately owned farm on a plateau above Lake Wakatipu, a short drive from central Queenstown. It's genuinely still a working farm rather than a purpose-built attraction — visitors pay an entry fee to drive up and explore, sharing the plateau with resident deer, llamas and other animals kept on the property.
What the wide-open plateau was used for
Its open, treeless plateau and sweeping panoramic backdrop made it useful for wide establishing and approach shots in the trilogy — the kind of scenery where you need uninterrupted sightlines across grassland toward mountains, without buildings or roads breaking the frame.
Self-drive, and what to expect on arrival
Unlike Hobbiton and Weta Workshop, this is a self-drive, self-guided visit — pay the entry fee at the gate and drive the property's track yourself at your own pace, stopping at viewpoints. Because it's a working farm rather than a formal attraction, opening hours and access can be less rigid than a ticketed site; check current hours before heading out.
What to bring
There's little in the way of shelter or facilities on the plateau itself, so bring water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear for walking on farmland — this isn't a paved, amenity-equipped tourist stop.
