The one that's actually near Queenstown
Unlike Hobbiton and Weta Workshop, Glenorchy is a genuine short trip from Queenstown — about 45 minutes by road, following the western shore of Lake Wakatipu. The drive itself, along the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, is commonly rated as one of the more scenic short drives in the country in its own right.
What the wider area was used for
The forest and mountain terrain around Glenorchy and the neighbouring Paradise area was used for several forest and wilderness sequences in the trilogy — this is real beech forest and river-flat farmland, not a constructed set, so there's no ticketed attraction here, just the landscape itself.
The village itself
Glenorchy is a small lakeside settlement with a handful of cafés and a public wharf, serving as the practical gateway to the wider Paradise and Dart Valley area (covered on our Dart River & Paradise page) rather than a destination with its own ticketed sites.
Getting there without a rental car
Shuttle and small-group tour operators run scheduled trips from Queenstown to Glenorchy for visitors without a rental car, typically combined with a short walk or a jet-boat add-on rather than sold as transport alone.
