How a canyon swing differs from bungy
A bungy jump is a controlled fall on an elastic cord that decelerates you and bounces you back up. A canyon swing is a free-fall drop into a wide pendulum arc on a fixed rope — no elastic recoil, and the sensation is closer to being flung sideways than bounced. The Nevis Canyon Swing's arc spans roughly 300 metres, run from a platform above the Nevis Bluff gorge.
The transfer is part of the experience
The Nevis site sits inside the Nevis Valley, reached by a dedicated 4WD transfer from central Queenstown — this transfer is included in the booking and takes roughly 45 minutes each way, which is why the total time commitment (around 3 hours) is longer than the swing itself.
Jump styles
Most operators offer a choice of how you go off the platform — backward, forward, or various tandem configurations — rather than a single fixed jump style, letting you pick something closer to your comfort level within the same basic swing.
Health and age requirements
Similar exclusions to bungy jumping apply: pregnancy, certain heart or back conditions, and recent surgery are common disqualifiers, along with a minimum-weight requirement for the harness system. Confirm current limits with the operator directly.
