What makes this canyon different
The Shotover River cuts through a canyon so narrow in places that the rock walls come within a couple of metres of the boat on both sides — a route that's only possible because the boats themselves are shallow-draft, purpose-built craft able to run in as little as 10cm of water, letting the driver line up tight bends that a conventional hull couldn't attempt.
What the ride actually involves
The signature move is the 360-degree spin, performed multiple times through the run in wider sections of the canyon — expect to get wet from the spray, especially in the front seats. Life jackets are compulsory and provided; the whole experience, including the safety briefing and a shuttle from the Shotover Jet base, runs about an hour.
How this differs from the Dart River Jet Safari
The Dart River Jet Safari, based near Glenorchy (covered on our Glenorchy page), runs a longer, more scenic route through braided river channels and beech forest rather than tight canyon walls — it's genuinely a different trip, not a rebrand of the same experience, and it's the one to pick if you want scenery over adrenaline-focused canyon driving.
Water levels and weather
Both low water (making certain channels unrunnable) and high water after heavy rain (triggering a safety pause) can affect a booking. Operators typically make this call on the day rather than in advance, so it's worth allowing a little schedule flexibility around a jet-boat booking rather than treating the time slot as completely fixed.
Health notes
There's no minimum age at most operators for this specific ride (unlike bungy or skydiving), but pregnancy and certain back or neck conditions are common exclusions — check with the operator if this applies to you.
